Apple Offers New Update Fixing Record 92 Security Flaws

Apple has released a new security update today (Update 2010-002) via Software Update. This fixes a record 92 security vulnerabilities in both Leopard (OS 10.5) and Snow Leopard (OS 10.6).

Most security issues on any computer arise from programming mistakes, which can be as simple as a minor typo, or much more complex. These bugs are an inevitable thing when you’re dealing with the millions of lines of programming code which go into a modern operating system like Mac OS X or Windows.

People discover these security flaws and then create exploits such as viruses, or maliciously designed websites, which take advantage of these flaws to cause problems. Exactly what kind of problem depends on the specific flaw.

As always, keeping up with with security fixes via Software Update on your Mac, or the equivalent Windows Update on a Windows computer is very important.

While fairly rare, people do sometimes experience new problems created by mistakes in the updates, so as a precaution I always recommend doing a backup — but then, I recommend backing up regularly no matter what. It’s just a good idea.
