The Return of the Commodore 64 — That’s 64 Bit!

Giving me flashbacks to the 1980s, there once again is a Commodore 64 on the marketplace. This time, the 64 must stand for 64-bit instead of the 64K it originally stood for.

Back in the day I used to monopolize my friends’ Commodores to play games and explore the then-new world of computers. By the time my parents bought me my own first computer in 1986, the Commodore line had already begun its slide towards obsolescence, and the computers were basically gone from the market by the time I was in college.

However, I had heard rumors about the Commodore brand name returning, and it seems it’s happened. The new Commodore resembles a much more updated version of the original design, and almost looks like a thick laptop without a screen.

And with the modern hardware inside it, it’s ready to run Windows, Linux, and apparently can even run Mac OS X (although this would violate the end user license from Apple and would not be supported by them).

Either way, very cool retro-modern bit of computing. I’d like to get my hands on one to take it for a spin, but you and I will have to wait until June 1st of 2010.
