A few days ago, I posted an article called Understanding URLs or Web Addresses To Help Be Protected From Phishing Scams which taught you the basics of understanding “URLs” or web addresses, so you could recognize and avoid a common trick used by online scammers to fool people into thinking links in emails were legit.

An online scam that almost had me fooled – here’s a tip to protect you

A while back I wrote you about how a number of people had their Apple iTunes account broken into, and I mentioned how this most likely happened due to “phishing scams”.

Have you ever been stuck in traffic behind a car with one of those custom license plates like “LUVYZ1″ and you’re scratching your head for a couple of minutes trying to figure out what on Earth it’s supposed to mean?

This latest computer question & answer comes from Mavis Wood who writes:

In this audio lesson I’ll be answering a computer question from Gold Club member Peter Proud, who asks:

· · ·

I heard from a reader named Phyllis who wrote with the question:

“Could you please tell me why I can’t print from Microsoft Office?”

There is also an Apple Mac version — if you’re subscribed to my podcast you should get both versions automatically, but if you have a Mac and you’re watching this on my website, you’ll want to click the following link to read: How to Undo Computer Mistakes in Apple Mac OS X

I’ve been meaning to write a post mentioning that I’ve set up my site to automatically add the majority of audio and video computer training which I post to this blog to my podcast, and show you how you can subscribe for free.

This audio computer lesson departs from the usual computer question & answer format – I recorded this lesson to help you stop wasting time and clogging up inboxes with those virus warnings everyone likes to forward around.

This latest computer question comes from Taj Abed who writes:

“Hello, thanks for information. I want to know about PC safety, please describe it to me. I really need to find out about it.”

This latest question comes from reader Edy Hall who has a question about options she has for broadband living in a rural area:
“Hi Worth,
Thanks for this msg…. I have a question – I live in the “bush” out Kalapana way.  Is that Coconut wireless a good choice for reliable internet with a little speed???
Thanks,  Edy”

In my answer I, as usual, don’t just quickly answer Edy’s specific question but give you a complete audio lesson that helps you understand some of the basic differences between a few of the broadband options, and how they contrast in speed to dialup (which may be the only option in many rural areas).

In this latest audio lesson I answer a computer question from a subscriber named Frazer Ames who writes:

“Hi Worth,
I just read the article on your website regarding modems and video chat. One of the things I have never understood about computers is this; what exactly is a modem and what does it do? I thought they were an essential part of all computers and had something to do with the speed, but I’ve never really understood.

In the over fifteen years I’ve been helping people with computers as a professional, I’ve found that a majority of people — even ones who have been using the computer for years — have huge gaps in their basic computer skills and as a result are making using the computer much harder for themselves than it has to be.

how to fix your Facebook privacy settings…

If you’ve been a student of mine for a while, you know I am very big on personal privacy and security issues and talk a lot about the importance of being careful about what you say and do online as it creates a permanent record that is shared with absolutely anybody and everybody who has an Internet connection.

Just for fun, I thought I’d post this video I found on YouTube. It was made by a family who got an iPad for the 100 year old matriarch of the family, Virginia.

· ·

I’ve been thinking for some time now that I might branch out from just doing computer training to also start doing iPad training. Having gotten my hands on one of Apple’s new devices just yesterday, I decided to shoot a little test video to see how it might work.

· ·

Well, it’s been a few days since the official release of Apple’s new iPad. For some reason, UPS decided they don’t ship on Saturdays on the Big Island (despite apparently delivering on Oahu) so nobody on the island was able to get their iPad delivered until Monday.

In this easy video lesson I answer the questions what is a router and what is a broadband modem in Plain English, while also showing you the steps to hook your router up to your cable or DSL modem so you can get your desktop or laptop computer on the Internet.

It seems that some people running Windows 7 and iTunes experience a problem where they get an error message saying that iTunes has been set to run in compatibility mode, and shouldn't be set that way. Problem is, Windows may give the error even if iTunes *isn't* set this way.
