Thank you Worth. My husband has had Macs since 1984. I had little interest in learning with him then developed a need to know after he became adept. Taking instructions from my husband was not fun or good for our marriage. Learning from you has been without shame.

Thank you for e-mail and tips. I would like to make it very clear that I want someone who can teach me everything. I am 61 years old and grew up using a pen and a calculator. I was not even a typist. Now thanks to my son I have learned bits and pieces . I can for example use part of photoshop like attaching two photos together. I can obviously browse , open and shut the computer but still there are a lot of very simple things which I do not know how to do. I therefore need a course which teaches me all starting from switching on the computer ( of course I know how to that ) but say cut and paste I do not know how to do. I will now follow the instructions. I therefore am looking for a complete beginners course which will lead me on to make full use of my computer. I am not interested in programming of course. At times I am asked to send an e-mail in header form . I do not know how to do it. I hope that I have made myself clear and look forward to hear from you whether you can give me this assistance in your course.I would eventually need i pad/i pod tutorials.

I wish you a prosperous New Year

Yours sincerely

Phong,
I don't currently have a copy of the installESD.dmg file to test with, but I tried opening Disk Utility, dragging a .dmg file into the sources column on the left, then right-clicking on it (all of this in Lion) and I get a burn option, so I'm not sure why you don't see one. I'm noticing the Restore option is grayed out, but that seems to be because Apple has now made it so the restore options appear on the right as soon as you click on the .dmg file on the left.
I suppose it's possible that Apple deliberately disabled burning a disc from that specific .dmg file (maybe try renaming it?) but I'm not sure why they would.
It wouldn't be bootable, but there's nothing preventing you from simply putting a blank DVD into your drive, waiting for it to show up on the desktop, then dragging the .DMG file into the icon and dragging the CD icon to the Trash to burn it. That should at least allow you to carry the installer to a Snow Leopard Mac and upgrade it, or possibly allow you to drag the dmg file to the desktop of that other Mac and then follow the instructions in the video to make a bootable DVD there.

   Hope that helps,

      Worth

Marli,
I'm sorry you ran into that computer problem. Unfortunately, what happened to you is exactly what I was trying to help people avoid in the first place -- because you saved over the good copy of the file, the old contents are gone. Now if you'd hit Undo right away, you could've reversed it and resaved, but the Undo history is only kept as long as the program is opened, so once you closed the program (or simply the document) it was lost.
The only other way to get the information back at this point is if you have a backup copy of the file. This is another reason that I constantly harp on about backing up your computer. I'm sure people get tired of hearing about it, but it's too important to ignore.
Again, I'm sorry not to be able to give you better news. Just remember for the future, back up regularly, use Save As periodically to make versions of your files, and remember to use Undo and you'll avoid a majority of computer headaches.

Julie,
If you're having a problem where the video plays then pauses, then plays, then pauses, etc. and it is happening with all or most videos online, then it may be that your Internet connection speed is not enough.
This can be because you're using a slow type of connection (like dialup which is just too slow for video) or because of a problem in the line or one of the devices.
You can run an Internet speed test by using a service like Speedtest.net to get an idea if the connection is actually slow.
If possible, you could try the computer on another Internet connection (at a friend's house, or on a public WiFi connection for example) and see if the problem persists there. If it does, there may be something wrong with your computer.
If the problem does not continue when you're on the other Internet connection, the computer is probably OK and the problem could be in your cable or DSL modem, the router (if you have one) or perhaps in the wiring.
Try unplugging the electricity from the modem and router, wait 30-45 seconds and plug them back in. If this fixes it, you've narrowed the problem down to either the modem or the router.
If it doesn't fix it, you should probably call your Internet service provider to have them fix the problem.
Hope that helps!

Jodie,

Keep in mind that you're not risking immediate damage to the computer, we're talking about damage over time.

So in a situation like you're describing you can still use the computer without it breaking down as a result, although if you regularly see days like this it could shorten the lifespan of the computer.

What I'm talking about has more to do with trapped heat that can't dissipate from within/around the computer. If you're talking about a desktop PC you could have a tech add an extra fan for more cooling, or if you're using a laptop use a cooling pad with fans.

That's never a bad idea.

You could also point a regular fan so it blows air past/over the computer if you want to be extra careful.

In an ideal situation, the room temperature would never rise above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (about 27 degrees Celsius), so yes, you might want to minimize computer usage on those really hot days, especially if it's a regular thing in your area.

Not to mention, if it's that hot out you're only making it worse by running the computer!

  Hope that makes sense.

It does not work for me. Up to the 2:50 min. mark in the video, where you right click on the "InstallESD.dmg", I don't have all those option. I don't have the option to burn. And it won't let me select a destination drive.

My computer is already running the Lion. I had to go back to the apple store and re-download the Lion, trying to make a boot disc using your instructions.

A quick question not covered above. If you live in a house with no air conditioning and temperatures reach 97 degrees or more should you just not use your computer? What should the room temperature be to avoid damaging your PC?

I have just watched your video on How to Undo Computer Mistakes in Microsoft Windows and I want to tell you that my problem goes beyond. I do not know whether you can help me or not but I will try even so.
I lost 3/4 of my monograph paper's last version (Word - Microsoft Office 2007) doing exactly the same as showed in your example (marking the text and typing a simple character by mistake. Unfortunately, I saved the file with the same name. Is there a possibility to recover it? What you do? This is driving me crazy... Thank you.

HI,
i tried to watch your video to find out what is wrong with the video and sometimes the audio on my computer - mac osx. But, I couldn't watch your video due to the problem. It looked like it kept trying to stream? I have tried so many options from googling that I may have made matters worse. Thanks for what looks like a well done and helpful video.

I enjoyed your lessons on incremental backup (a.k.a. versioned backup) and “cloning” backup. They where very interesting and provided me with a sound knowledge on the subject matter.
