My name is Worth Godwin, and I've been helping people with their computers for about thirteen years now. I've seen thousands of people who call themselves "dummies" or "idiots," when it came to computers, even though they were perfectly smart people who were definitely not stupid. I've seen the same thing over and over again: from fishermen and farmers, to captains of industry and college professors. All of them, no matter how good they were at other skills and in different parts of their lives, they felt like complete idiots when they sat down in front of a computer and tried to use it. The problem was not that any of these people were dumb. Far from it.The problem was, they never had been taught in a way that actually worked! I've been working one-on-one with people, thousands of them over the years, and I dedicated myself to to improving my teaching skills, not just my technical skills. But sometimes it seemed like it was never enough. I figured out ways to explain things to people that really and truly made sense: comparing an email server to a post office, your email account to the post office box, and the password to the key, for example. When I explain things this way, people just get it. It takes the "technobabble" and ties it to something in the real world that you can relate to.
And that helped people a lot. But the big problem was, the way people learn is a process: we start out focused on the tiny little details, and it takes a while to get better at things, and understand them more, so we can start thinking on a bigger level; we can finally see the big picture. Think about when you learn to drive a car: you start out thinking about how much to turn the wheel, when to press the gas, when to press the brake, how much to press the brake...When you're thinking at that level, the first time you drive on a busy road, it can be a little overwhelming, and it can seem almost impossible to do. But with a little practice, you stop thinking about how to drive, and just start driving. Soon it seems like you've always been driving; it comes so naturally. If someone asked you how you drove to work, but wanted to know when you pushed the brake, how hard you pushed it, when and how hard you pushed the gas pedal, or any other question about the little details and the little steps of driving, you probably wouldn't have any idea how to answer the question. When
you stop thinking about how you do something, and just start
doing it, that's when you're really good at a skill.
Unfortunately, since most computer consultants are good at computers, the only way they can explain things is at the level they think at. This is like a driving instructor getting in a car with a brand new first-time driver and telling them "oh, just drive into town" and thinking that would actually work. But it just doesn't work, and if the student driver didn't have any other options or anywhere else to turn to, they'd probably end up feeling pretty frustrated and might even call themselves dumb. It took me years, and a lot of practice, but I learned how to teach people using plain English, explaining things at the "little steps" level. Because I could do this, I've been told by more people than I can count, that I've helped them more than anybody else ever has. It wasn't easy for me to learn, but I did. But then I realized, that was the easy part! The real problem that I realized I needed to solve, the one that nobody seemed to have a solution for, was how to not only give simple step by step instructions, and not only how to explain things in an easy, understandable way, but how to tie it all together. How to take someone from just memorizing a bunch of steps, to a place where they just can do it without having to think about it.
When people learn, it's like they're walking up a hill... With each step, you get further up the hill, and you can see a little farther. But you can't always find the path alone, so you need a hand to guide you further along, farther up the hill, so you can really start to see all the possibilities stretching out around you, and finally understand how it all fits together. Sometimes I felt like I was way up the hill, and I'd figured out how to run back down the hill and start to lead someone up along the path to really mastering their computer, but I was never able to take them more than a few steps before I had to stop. Then when I saw them again, the person I was trying to help had either stayed exactly where I'd left them, or had even accidentally walked back down the hill a little ways. What was happening was a client would call me and book me for a lesson. Now, consultants are expensive, so people naturally try to get as much out of the lesson as they can by trying to cover as much as possible in just an hour or two. But as you probably know from experience, that doesn't really work that well -- if you try to learn too much at once, it just goes in one ear and out the other, and a lot of it just doesn't sink in. And anybody who's taken computer classes can tell you those aren't any better. If you can even find classes for Macs at all! As a matter of fact, scientists and top educators have discovered that because of the way that the human mind works, we all learn best in lessons that are about thirty minutes long, or shorter. If we try to learn in lessons that drone on for an hour or two or three, our brains are physically wired to not take in any more after a while -- there is a better way! So more often than not, people end up throwing away money on consultants. It's not that the consultants don't know what they're doing, or that they're trying to keep you in the dark -- it's just that the basic idea of learning computers the old way is completely flawed. And this was the wall I was banging my head against in frustration for years as I tried to help people. I was able to help them, but never enough. Never as much as I wanted to help them, or as much as they needed. But I finally found a solution: it took me years of studying, and once I figured out the basic idea, it took me the better part of a year to really put it together. I've created a revolutionary new method -- which is designed to not only show you step-by-step instructions, or explain things in a way that really does make sense -- but to tie all the learnings, all the lessons together. To really boost you farther up that hill than you ever thought possible. So you're able to look back on all you've learned, and look forward to everything you're finding yourself able to do, and everything you suddenly know you'll be able to do in the future. To feel a sense of confidence, to realize you really aren't a dummy after all.
