How to Avoid Common Mouse
Mistakes -
Mouse Basics Made Easy
15:19
Over the years, I've found that a majority of people aren't
really using their mouse the right way. This is not to say
they're using it completely wrong, but they misunderstand
when they're supposed to click once, and when they're supposed
to double-click. In many cases, they double-click everything,
which can cause unexpected results and lead to frustration
and confusion.
While there unfortunately is no dead simple, clear-cut rule
for when to click and when to double-click that can be said
in one or two sentences, this lesson goes over most of the
common examples and variations a few times to show you the
right way to use your mouse.
Also clarifies terminology that a lot of people misuse, and
explains when to "right-click", and why you might
want to do so.
Burning a CD in Windows
15:51
Shows you how to burn a CD-R with pictures, documents or
other files, using the built-in Windows CD burning software.
Note: This does not cover how to burn a music CD. See iTunes
lessons to see how to do that.
How to chose your
desktop background
9:15
I show you the steps of how to set any picture as the background
(or "wallpaper") for your desktop.
How to chose a screen
saver
10:18
Shows you how to chose a screensaver, shows some of the
options for the screensaver, and clarifies a common misconception
about the term "screen saver"
An introduction
to basic editing skills
17:40
This lesson teaches fundamental computer skills that can
make your life easier, save you time, and transforms your
computer from an overpriced typewriter into a tool for making
writing easier.

In this lesson I show you a very useful thing to do,
which is to keep your desktop clean and organize your files.
People tend to have very cluttered desktops, and aside
from making it hard to find things, it can slow down your
computer.
Find out
more about your hard drive
7:23
This lesson shows you how to find out the size of your
hard drive, how much of it is used, and how much of it is
free. This is very important information to know, because
if your hard drive doesn't have enough free space, it can
not only slow down your computer, but cause you to lose important
files or even keep your computer from starting up and working.
Find
out how much memory your computer has and other important
information about your computer
4:35
I'll show you in this lesson how to use the System Properties,
which gives you important information about your computer
including how much RAM, or memory, your computer has (This
is not the same thing as how big your hard drive is), plus
info about Windows.
It's a good idea to know how much RAM you have because a
lot of people don't have as much as they should, and a very
inexpensive upgrade can make a big difference in how well
your computer runs. This lesson will show you exactly how
to find out if you should put more RAM into your PC.
Making
folders to organize your files
10:16
This lesson shows you how you can create different folders
to easily keep your different files more organized and easier
to find.
Renaming
a file or folder
3:04
How to rename a file or folder -- makes it easier to recognize
a file by it's name instead of guessing what it is or having
to open it each time to find out.
Understanding
the title bar and the 3 title bar buttons
10:32
Understanding the title bar, an important part of most
the windows of the different programs you use.
How
to add the My Computer & My Documents icons to your
desktop
6:23
Windows XP & Visa normally do not have the Computer
or Documents icons on the desktop (although the company
you bought your computer from may have added them). This
video shows you how to add them, and also how to remove
them if you don't want them.
Note: this lesson was recorded in XP, but the steps are the
same for Vista. The only difference is "My Computer" in
XP is just called "Computer"
in Vista, and "My Documents" is just called "Documents" in
Vista.
Desktop overview
4:23
Get a quick intro and orientation on the Windows desktop.
Using the Recycle
Bin
3:47
This lesson shows you the basics of the Windows Recycle
Bin, including how to put files into the Recycle Bin, and
how to empty it. Includes a tip on avoiding a common mistake
I see people making with their recycle bin.
Changing
folder views
13:00
This lesson shows you how you can switch between different "views" of
your files and folders on your computer. Each view has its
pros and cons and I go over how things look and work in each
view.

doing so.
Disabling
the annoying
"Desktop Cleanup" popups
2:37
This lesson shows you how to turn off an annoying feature
of Windows that bugs you again and again to removed unused
icons from your desktop. The way to turn this feature off
is kind of hidden, but this shows you where to go to turn
it off.
Turning

make it work better for you, including how to make the
pointer larger and easier to see, how to make it easier
to double-click, and more.
Keeping Your Files Safe By Backing
Up using XXClone
Failing to back up (make backup copies of your
computer's files)
is the number one mistake I see people make with their
computer. Avoid this common mistake with these lessons.
XXClone is a free program that, unlike most backup programs,
backs up 100% of your hard drive, and makes the drive
bootable. This way of backing up is the single best way
to back your drive up out of all of the options available.
Understanding
USB hard drives
7:59
I explain the basics of a USB2 hard drive; what it is,
advice on buying the right one, and a brief recap of why
it is very important to have one (see my audio report "5
Common and Costly Computer Mistakes" for more information)
Downloading & Installing
XXClone
3:28
This lesson shows you how to download the free program
XXClone, and how to install it.
Formatting
your new hard drive
11:39
This lesson shows you how you can "format" your
hard drive so it is ready to be used. This is a one-time
step, and is usually not needed, but I've included it just
in case.
Please watch the first few minutes to find out if you need
to do this step.
Setting
your USB drive to be "bootable"
5:32
Follow this easy, one-time step to make sure the drive
is "bootable"
which means you can start the computer up from it. This is
important and will save you time and money if you ever need
to replace the main hard drive inside of the computer.
Running XXClone
to make a full, 100% backup copy of your computer's hard
drive
7:05
This lesson shows you the steps you need to follow to run
XXClone and make a complete backup copy of your main hard
drive, protecting all of your important files.

Understanding
and using "shortcuts" in Windows
10:13
Shortcuts are a very common thing in Windows, yet a lot
of people don't understand them or know how to use them.
This lesson explains what they are and how to use them to
save time and effort on your computer by setting it up to
be convenient for you. Also has an important tip on what
files are, and what files aren't safe to delete or move around
The "UAC" in
Windows Vista
4:55
Windows Vista has a new so-called security feature called
UAC (User Account Control) which is supposedly there to protect
your computer and increase security by having a question "do
you want to continue?" pop up on your screen whenever
you are about to do something potentially risky to your system.
It is very debatable whether this actually makes your computer
more secure in any way (and in fact, Microsoft admitted they
designed it to come up constantly to deliberately to be annoying
to Windows users!). It is a feature of Windows Vista that
tends to confuse people a lot when they move from XP, so
I've included a short lesson on what to expect and how to
deal with it.
Setting
Up Windows Vista to Look And Act More Like Windows XP (And
Run Faster As a Result)
15:43
Some of the biggest changes between Windows XP and Windows
Vista that the user sees are very superficial "eye candy" that
doesn't really add anything to your experience, and can really
slow your computer down. In this lesson I show you how to
turn off some of the "bells and whistles"
in Vista to make it run faster, and make it look a lot more
familiar to those of you used to Windows XP. Follow these
steps and you should find that your system is a little more "peppy" and
responsive to use, and a lot easier if you're used to older
versions of Windows.
Understanding
Search Engines Better and Getting Better Search Results
20:06
I find a lot of people do not really understand the
way a search engine (like Google) works, and so they end
up using it incorrectly, or not nearly as effectively as
they could. In this lesson I explain a little of the "nuts
and bolts" of how a search engine works, plus demonstrate
a few example searches to give you a better idea of how
to phrase your search.

Skype is a free program that lets you have text, audio,

use and works great even when calling from a Windows computer
to a Mac or vice versa, unlike some of the alternatives.
I'll be showing you how to download the program and set it

Skype, like most chat programs, uses a list of contacts
or "buddies"
that lets you keep in touch with your friends, family, or
whomever you want to be able to talk to with the program.
This lesson shows you how to find and add a contact to your
list.
Setting
your "status"
7:34
Your "status" is a way to let people know if
you are available for a conversation in Skype. Setting your
status to Available, Away, Busy, etc. is easy to do, and
being able to recognize when one of your contacts in Skype
might not be able to chat is a simple but important skill.
Calling
someone with Skype
3:42
See how to call someone in your contact list so you can
have an audio (voice) conversation, or even a video conversation
with them for free, anywhere in the world.
Note: voice chats may work on dialup connections, but video
chats will not, because dialup is just too slow. Video chats
also need a web cam, which often comes included in many modern
computers.
Please also note that during the lesson you see me on a video
chat and you may notice my voice and my lips' movement is
not in sync -- this is caused by the recording of the video
lesson, and does not happen when you are in an actual video
chat.

Importing photos
from your digital camera into Picasa
8:04
In this lesson I walk you through how to import photos
from your camera into Picasa. Importing is the process
of copying photos from the camera to the computer.
Please note: Most digital cameras will work just fine with
Picasa and Windows, but a small minority may not. If you've
never used your camera with your PC before, you may need
to install software from a CD to get it to work. This should
be covered in your camera's manual.
It is OK to try plugging your camera in to see what happens
without installing the camera's software first. If it works
OK, then you probably don't need to bother installing anything
that came with the camera.
Using Picasa's "Basic
Fixes"
13:01
In this lesson I give you an overview of the "basic
fixes" that you can make to pictures. These are some
of the different things you can do to to change or improve
your photos, including straightening crooked pictures, making
them brighter or darker, etc.
How to fix "red
eye" with Picasa
4:37
I show you how to get rid of the red eye effect that happens
when you take pictures sometimes -- where a person's eyes
seem to glow red. This tool lets you get rid of the red glowing
eyes with a couple of clicks, without affecting the rest
of the picture. It also can be used for another interesting
effect that the designers didn't plan on, but which can be
kind of fun and interesting to play with.
How to use a
scanner to
scan photos with Picasa
7:16
I've had a number of requests for lessons on how to
scan photos with a scanner. There are many makes and models
of scanners on the market, and each one comes with a different
program for scanning. Unfortunately there is no real "built
in" scanning software for Windows, and I can't really
go out and buy every make and model scanner on the market,
install each different scanning program that comes with
those scanners, and do a lesson on each one.
So I recorded a lesson on the next-best thing: how to use
Picasa to scan your photos. This should work with all or
most scanners on the market, and the basic steps are similar
to the program that came with your scanner. I also make comments
throughout that compare the similarities
& differences between scanning with Picasa and with other
programs, so the lesson should help with other scanning software
too.

before watching this lesson; you need to make a playlist
before burning a CD.
The music CDs you make should play in most CD players or
on any computer, but some older CD players may not recognize
the disk.
Tip: You do not need to buy blank CDs labeled "Music
CD" -- any CD-R will work, and the "music CD" ones
are usually more expensive.

Description
Microsoft Word Lessons
Microsoft
Word, which is part of Microsoft Office, is a word processing
program. In other words, it is a tool for writing various
types of documents from personal or business letters, to
resumes, and more.
In the following lessons I show you how to use many of the
basic functions of Word.
It can be expensive to buy Microsoft Office, and not everybody
has it, so I have included lessons on how to get the free
program OpenOffice which is a free "open source"
alternative to Microsoft Office. Scroll down to see the lessons
on NeoOffice's free equivalent of Word.
Introduction to
Word
5:21
A basic overview of the main Word window, including the "toolbars" which
contain buttons for many of the main functions of Word.
Basic layout
of documents in Word
4:55

numbers, etc.) are formatted on the page -- bold, italic, larger or smaller, different fonts,
etc.
Making
lists in Word
2:55
How to easily create two types of lists in Word: a bullet
list (a series of items with "bullets" at the beginning
of each line) and numbered lists (a series of items automatically
numbered 1,2,3, etc. on each line)

to automatically number pages in Word
3:50
Set Word to automatically number each page in your document,
and chose where the number appears on the page
Spell
checking your Word document
9:57
See two ways to have Word help correct your spelling mistakes,
and how to "teach" Word less common words (like
names, for example) which Word thinks are misspelled, by
adding them to your own personal dictionary so they don't
get marked as wrong in the future.
Using
the "Zoom"
function to make your documents easier to read on the screen
3:27
This lesson shows you how to use the Zoom feature to make
the words appear larger on the screen without making them
oversized when you print them out.
Please see the lesson on formatting of text to see how to
change the size of words when you print your document.

the find feature

on a document that goes through more than one draft.
Using the Free Program OpenOffice
Instead of The Expensive Word Program
OpenOffice is an "open source" program (made through
the collaboration of many people around the world instead
of by a single company) which is a high quality free alternative
to Microsoft Office, including Word. The program does everything
most people want, but costs nothing, instead of hundreds
of dollars.
Downloading
OpenOffice
4:06
This lesson shows you how to download the free program
OpenOffice, and how to install it.
Installing
OpenOffice
8:24

What happens the first time you run OpenOffice Writer
(the equivalent to Word) plus a basic overview of the main
OpenOffice Writer window, including the "toolbars" which
contain buttons for many of the main functions, and a comparison
to Word.
For most things, using OpenOffice is almost identical to
using Word, so refer to the Word lessons on how to do different
things like formatting text, etc.
